We're More Than Just a Self-Defense Site
When it comes to crime and violence, the old saying "an
ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is not only true, but a potential
life saver. And that is not hyperbole. While most incidents don't result in fatalities, the stakes are always high.
The good news is an overwhelming majority of our recommendations are nonviolent and have no negative impact on your lifestyle.
How can that be? Well, you might want to visit the Frequently Asked Questions page.
It all it boils down to the fact that, while the ability to defend yourself is important, we believe common sense preventive actions are far more reliable ways to ensure your personal safety, as well as that of your loved ones.
In order to be safe, the average person:
All you need is to know the details of the problems you are most likely to face ... and then use a little common sense. After that, it's easy. It's mostly about knowing where you don't want to be and making sure someone can't put you there.
In a similar vein, you don't need to know everything about self-defense. In fact that is one of the biggest misconceptions about self-defense. That last link will help you clarify your real needs so you won't get taken in by some fast-talking salesperson.
The hardest part is doing your homework before you find yourself in a situation -- and that is what you are doing now.
If You Are in Immediate Trouble
Having said that we're not here to turn you into a kung fu expert or a paranoid
survivalist, if you are currently
in a dangerous, or potentially dangerous, situation ... then obviously the necessary steps will require
more effort on your part.
This is especially true if you live in a high crime area or are in a profession where violence is likely, such as law enforcement or employed as a bouncer. In these cases, you are going to have to pay greater attention to remaining safe and take more active steps toward that goal. We address those topics on this site, as well.
We also offer solutions and information for average people who unexpectedly find themselves "hot" situations. By this we mean your normal life has been disrupted by a stalker or a mentally unstable or violent person. Unfortunately the required actions will be more intense. You aren't trying to prevent a problem, you already have one!
In these crises, you cannot just make the situation go away. It's vital you focus on damage control.
Making this "mental shift" is critical. To quote Albert Einstein: You cannot solve significant problems with the same thinking you had when you created them. Things are not going to go back to 'normal'. And that problem will not "just go away" -- as many people seem to hope. And they then feel even more helpless and out of control when it doesn't disappear. Your goal is to make sure it doesn't get any worse. You do this by stepping ahead of the problem and changing tactics. You stride away form tactics that allowed the situation to escalate and leap to tactics that will bring it to a close.
Even in these extreme circumstances, the most effective steps ensuring your personal safety are not necessarily confrontational. They are measures to indemnify yourself and deter him. If those fail (and many times they don't) there are solutions that will hinder him, give yourself early warning and obtain necessary help.
Our attitude, having nearly 70 years of collective experience with crime and violence (both first-hand and through research) is: Violence is always the last -- and worst -- option. Our goal is not to teach you how to fight; it is to help you regain control of your life.
